ChatGPT can write the code for an app, but on its own it can’t compile, run, test, or publish an iPhone app for you. To turn that code into an app yourself, you need Xcode on a Mac, a paid Apple Developer account to publish it, and the setup in between: a project, build errors, signing, and the App Store listing. Or connect Vibecode in ChatGPT, and ChatGPT builds a real native iPhone app or web app for you. You try it running inside the chat, and an iPhone app can go to the App Store. You don’t need a Mac, and you don’t write any code.

Can ChatGPT Build an App on Its Own?

Here is what a plain ChatGPT chat does for an iPhone app, and what changes with Vibecode connected:

What Is Vibecode in ChatGPT?

Vibecode is a plugin in ChatGPT. On July 9, 2026, OpenAI replaced its App Directory with the Plugin Directory, so what used to be called ChatGPT apps now sit under Plugins. The Vibecode plugin connects ChatGPT to your Vibecode account. When you ask for an app, ChatGPT turns your request into a short build brief and sends it to Vibecode. Vibecode’s agent builds the app in the cloud: a native Swift and SwiftUI iPhone app compiled on cloud Macs, or a web app that runs in the browser. It tests the app and saves it to your Vibecode account, where you can keep working on it in Vibecode on the web or in the Vibecode iPhone app.

What You Need

  • A ChatGPT account. OpenAI’s plugin directory is on every ChatGPT plan, including Free. Whether you can install a given plugin depends on your plan, region, workspace, and the ChatGPT app you use. Plugins are in ChatGPT on the web, in the desktop app, and in the mobile apps.
  • On a work account, a workspace that allows it. ChatGPT Business turns many apps on by default. Enterprise and Edu workspaces start with a selected set. If Vibecode shows Disabled by admin, ask your workspace admin.
  • A Vibecode account. You can create one while connecting. New accounts that sign up with Google or Apple get their first app build free. After that, builds, changes, and the live preview use credits.
You don’t need a Mac, Xcode, or coding experience. OpenAI’s plan, region, and workspace rules are from OpenAI’s plugin help article as of October 2026.

How to Connect Vibecode in ChatGPT

1

Open Vibecode in ChatGPT

Open Vibecode in ChatGPT. Or select Plugins in the ChatGPT sidebar and search for Vibecode. Plugins is in the sidebar on chatgpt.com, in the ChatGPT desktop app, and in the ChatGPT mobile apps.
2

Install it

Select Install plugin. If ChatGPT asks you to connect Vibecode, select Connect. If ChatGPT doesn’t ask yet, it asks when you first use Vibecode in a chat.
3

Sign in to Vibecode

Sign in to Vibecode (or create an account), then select Allow. ChatGPT can now build and change apps in your Vibecode account.
4

Start a chat

Ask for an app in a new chat. ChatGPT uses your installed plugins when they fit the request. To pick Vibecode yourself, type @Vibecode, or select + and choose Vibecode.
Very old versions of the ChatGPT iPhone and Android apps show Apps instead of Plugins. If you can’t find Plugins, update the app.

How to Build an App in ChatGPT

Ask ChatGPT for the app you want, in plain English:
  • “Using Vibecode, build me an iPhone app to track my workouts, with a weekly summary.”
  • “Build me a web app to plan my meals for the week.”
  • “Using Vibecode, build me a habit tracker iPhone app with daily streaks.”
ChatGPT writes a short brief and starts the build. It may ask you to approve a Vibecode action first, such as a change to an app. Your Permissions settings under Settings > Plugins decide how often it asks. A build usually takes about 10 minutes. While it runs, a Vibecode card in the chat shows what the agent is working on, and shows the app on an iPhone simulator while the agent tests it. You can keep chatting in the meantime. When the build finishes, the card posts a short message, such as “Vibecode finished working on Workout Tracker.”, and ChatGPT replies. If ChatGPT doesn’t let the card post on its own, the card shows a Continue in chat button instead.

Try the App in the Chat

When the app is ready, it runs live in the card:
  • An iPhone app runs on a live iPhone simulator. Click or tap through it as you would on a phone.
  • A web app runs live in a browser view inside the card.
The live preview uses credits while it runs. A new account’s first app has free preview time. If nobody touches the iPhone preview for 2 minutes, it pauses itself. Select Resume preview to start it again. Where ChatGPT allows it, the card has a full screen button that makes the preview larger. The card also links to the app outside ChatGPT:

Keep Going

  • Change an app. Ask, for example, “Make the buttons in my workout app blue and add a rest timer.” Vibecode makes the change and tests it, and the card follows along.
  • Pick up any app. Ask “Show me my Vibecode apps” to see the apps in your account, including ones you built in Vibecode itself.
  • Find out what happened. Ask what the agent changed, or “Why did the last build of my habit tracker fail?” ChatGPT can read the app’s code and logs to answer.
  • Undo or stop a change. Ask ChatGPT to go back to an earlier version, or to stop a change that’s running.
  • Manage your apps. Ask ChatGPT to rename, copy, or delete an app.
ChatGPT can’t run commands in an app’s workspace. Coding tools such as Codex, Claude Code, and Cursor can, through the Vibecode MCP server.

How to Disconnect Vibecode from ChatGPT

  1. In ChatGPT, open Settings > Plugins and select Vibecode.
  2. Under Connected accounts, open the more options menu (•••) next to your Vibecode account. If you don’t see Connected accounts, use Connection or the plugin’s ••• menu.
  3. Select Disconnect.
Uninstalling the plugin can also disconnect it. Disconnecting stops ChatGPT’s access to your Vibecode account. It doesn’t delete your ChatGPT conversations, and your apps stay in your Vibecode account. To learn what Vibecode receives from ChatGPT and what it sends back, see Vibecode in ChatGPT and Claude in our Privacy Policy. For help, visit Support.

Is It Free to Build an App with ChatGPT?

Connecting Vibecode is free. Everything else, as of October 2026: Vibecode prices are from vibecodeapp.com/pricing, ChatGPT’s plan rules from OpenAI’s help center, and the Apple fee from developer.apple.com/programs, all as of October 2026. Builds and changes from ChatGPT use the same credits as building in Vibecode.

Can You Vibe Code with ChatGPT?

Vibe coding means building by describing what you want and judging the result, instead of writing the code yourself (more in What is vibe coding? and Can I vibe code?). In a plain ChatGPT chat, what comes back is code, and running it is your job. With Vibecode connected, you describe the app, try it in the card, ask for a change, and try it again, all in the chat.

Other Ways to Build an App with ChatGPT

Vibecode isn’t the only way. These are OpenAI’s own tools and the do-it-yourself route, as of October 2026:

Codex

Codex is OpenAI’s coding agent. On ChatGPT Free and Go it runs in the ChatGPT desktop app, and from Plus up it also runs in the Codex CLI, the IDE extension, and Codex Cloud. For a native iPhone app you still need Xcode on a Mac. There you can choose Codex as the agent in Xcode’s coding assistant, and it can build and test your app. Or connect Vibecode to Codex and let Codex direct Vibecode’s agent, with no Xcode. Our Codex guide covers both.

ChatGPT in Xcode

Apple’s Xcode has ChatGPT built in, where available. Choose Xcode > Settings, select Intelligence, and select Turn On in the ChatGPT in Xcode row. It works with or without a ChatGPT account. You still need a Mac that runs Xcode (see the next section).

ChatGPT Sites

ChatGPT Sites builds interactive websites and lightweight apps from a chat and hosts them at a URL. It’s on ChatGPT Plus and Pro and in Business and Enterprise workspaces, not on Free or Go. Start it from Work on chatgpt.com or in the ChatGPT desktop app, and mention @Sites. Building a Site counts toward your Codex usage. A Site is a website, not an iPhone app.

Copy ChatGPT’s Code into Xcode Yourself

This route costs nothing beyond a Mac and, to publish, Apple’s fee. You do every step yourself:
  1. Get a Mac with Xcode. Xcode is free on the Mac App Store. Xcode 27 needs a Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later) running macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later.
  2. Make a project. Create a new iPhone app project in Xcode. Ask ChatGPT for SwiftUI code one screen at a time, and paste each file in.
  3. Fix build errors. Build the app. When Xcode shows errors, paste them into ChatGPT and apply its fixes. Expect several rounds.
  4. Test it. Run the app in the iOS Simulator on your Mac and tap through it yourself.
  5. Put it on your iPhone. Sign in to your Apple Account in Xcode. Without a paid membership, Xcode uses a free Personal Team: up to 3 devices, and the install expires after 7 days, so you rebuild and reinstall it.
  6. Publish it. Join the Apple Developer Program ($99/year). Then upload a build, complete the App Store listing in App Store Connect, and pass App Review. See How to Publish an App to the App Store.
Xcode and Apple Developer details are from Apple’s Xcode listing and membership comparison as of October 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not on its own. ChatGPT writes the code, and you build, run, test, and publish it yourself in Xcode on a Mac. With Vibecode connected, ChatGPT has Vibecode’s agent build and test a native iPhone app or web app in the cloud, and the app runs in the chat.
Yes, with Vibecode. Vibecode builds a native Swift and SwiftUI iPhone app on cloud Macs, and the card runs it on a live iPhone simulator in the chat. Without Vibecode, ChatGPT can write Swift code, but you need a Mac with Xcode to build and run it, and an Apple Developer account ($99/year) to publish it.
Connecting Vibecode is free, and OpenAI’s plugin directory is on every ChatGPT plan, including Free. A new Vibecode account that signs up with Google or Apple gets its first app build free, with free preview time. After that, Vibecode plans start at $20/month. See Vibecode pricing.
No. You describe the app and ask for changes in plain English, and Vibecode’s agent writes, builds, and tests the code. If you want the code later, the Pro and Max plans can download it.
Yes, for an iPhone app. When it’s ready, select Publish to the App Store on the card to open App Store publishing in Vibecode. Vibecode builds, signs, uploads, and submits the app for review. You need an Apple Developer Program membership ($99/year) and a paid Vibecode plan. See How to Publish an App to the App Store.
Yes. OpenAI makes plugins available in ChatGPT on the web, on desktop, and on mobile. On a phone, the card’s main button opens your app in the Vibecode iPhone app instead of showing a QR code. If the live preview doesn’t start on its own, select Tap to start live preview on the card.
After you sign in and select Allow, ChatGPT can see your Vibecode apps: their names, build status, what the agent did, and their code and logs. Your app’s keys stay hidden in files and logs. Vibecode receives only what ChatGPT sends it, such as the app brief or your change request, not the rest of your conversation. OpenAI notes that ChatGPT may share relevant context from your chats and memories with apps you connect. See Vibecode in ChatGPT and Claude in our Privacy Policy.
OpenAI says plugin availability depends on your plan, region, workspace, role, and the ChatGPT app you use. Check that you’re in the right ChatGPT account or workspace and that your ChatGPT app is up to date. In a work workspace, an admin may need to turn Vibecode on. You can also open Vibecode in ChatGPT directly.
Not directly. In ChatGPT, Vibecode builds iPhone apps and web apps, and a web app runs in any phone’s browser. For one app on iPhone and Android, create a Mobile app (React Native) in Vibecode itself (Swift vs React Native).
